SURPRISING HYDRANGEA VARIETIES

Speaker:
Teresa Boody

When you think of hydrangeas, most people think of the large and showy blue, pink or white French hydrangeas that provide so much color in late spring and early summer here in central Alabama. Close behind in popular recognition are our native Oak Leaf Hydrangeas. Alabama’s pride is the native Snowflake Hydrangea that was discovered and brought into the trade by Birmingham’s own Eddie Aldridge. Surprisingly, these are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to hydrangea varieties. There are many uncommon and overlooked hydrangea and many of them can be found here in Alabama and throughout our neighboring southeastern states.

Come to the next meeting to learn about these overlooked hydrangeas. You will leave knowing a little more about varieties such as Little Geisha, Chattooga, Munchkin, Ruby Slippers (and no, we are not talking The Wizard of OZ!), Deutzia, the ever strange Schizophragma and many more. This meeting is open to members and visitors. All are welcome.
