X-WR-CALDESC:Propagator level members will enjoy their monthly wine recepti
on while mixing and mingling with this Pulitzer Prize finalist (1982 Featu
re Photography). Walt Stricklin uniquely captures levels of empathy and co
mpassion in still moments\, creating visual metaphors for the human condit
ion. Constrained by the conventions of traditional photojournalism\, he so
ught and found his own visual language. Borrowing from the iconic works of
David Hockney\, he merged his curiosity of cultural anthropology into a s
eries documenting the world\, covering everything from Mongolian herdsmen
to Delta juke joints. His current work focuses on country churches. \n\nHe
re's what he has to say about it:\n'My composite landscapes are my attempt
to capture that touch between people and the harmony they have with the p
lace in which they live. I am in awe of the world and how people have adap
ted to living in it. This only emphasizes my belief that our environment s
hapes us as much as we shape our surroundings. The rural south is just one
small example of the varied geography and socioeconomics of our world and
how that strength of fellowship can shape a community.\n\nConstructing my
panoramas by hand from individual photographs gives me the opportunity to
present landscapes that have a wholly different perspective that anything
that can be photographed in a single image. They are sculptures that allo
w me to blend time\, location and my perception of the situation. They go
beyond the predetermined proportions of a camera or the homogenized applic
ations of a computer generated panorama\, allowing the composition to go w
herever they lead with movement both inside and outside\ntheir frame. \n\n
They are not meant to be perfect\; the many individual imperfections are l
eft to engage and draw the viewer into my images for the enjoyment of disc
overy and to help them celebrate our imperfect humanity. I want my Scapes
to have a lyrical quality that allows the viewer to see the music of the v
isual world celebrating the harmony of place and people\, while respecting
our unique qualities.'\n\nJoin us on the 14th to hear more\, directly fro
m Walt himself.\n\nThis propagator member event will roll into the general
  artist reception beginning at 6 p.m. \n
