Learn how Native Americans created a variety of useful containers for everyday life as well as beautiful pieces of art used in ceremonies. Betsy discusses the archaeological evidence for gourds being the first cultivated plant in the Americas as well as the many ways gourds can be decorated. Then, participants will create and decorate a mask, basket, bottle or bowl, decorating it with Southeastern Indian inspired designs. Bring a sack lunch to enjoy at noon with other class members. Drinks provided. Class members will receive handouts including a bibliography of great books on gourd art and where to purchase gourds. Teacher professional development hours available.
