Through trial and error over the years, Jack and Candy Wallace have learned how to build their own cold frame and have generously agreed to share their insider’s knowledge with class members at Aldridge Gardens. A cold frame is a transparent-roofed enclosure, built low or into the ground used to protect plants in cold weather. Using local materials that are inexpensive and easy to find, the Wallaces use their cold frame as a holding bed and to jump start plants 30-45 days early with this temporary “green house.” They will explain the proper slope for drainage, height, angle toward the sun, and where to get the necessary materials so that you may build your own before the winter cold sets in. Jack will actually demonstrate during class how he builds a cold frame, and detailed hand-outs will be distributed. Although kits and commercial systems are available, come join us as we learn how to make use of an inexpensive, tried and practical idea of some seasoned gardeners!
