Cherokee Leaf Pounding
Instructor: Bettye Kimbrell, Crafter - featured on AL Public Television
Re-registration required. Workshop limited to 12.
Master an ancient Cherokee Indian craft making exquisite botanical imprints on placemats, napkins, quilt pieces, aprons, pillow cases, T shirts, table runners, or any 100% cotton fabric. Soft and moist leaves such as herbs and vegetables (nothing “woody”) are used. The leaf including veins will be broken up with a hammer, leaving controlled imprints (“grass stains”) on your fabric. You will also learn how to “set” the imprint permanently. You may have seen this craft exhibited at the fall Kentuck Festivals. Bring to class: leaves (with stems in water) you wish to pound, large wooden cutting board, roll of wide masking tape, a thin, worn bath towel, lightweight 100% off-white cotton muslin fabric item(s) of your choice, and a small hammer. Bettye will have extra hammers, plant material, and with permission, perhaps we may gather a few leaves from the Gardens. Bring your friends, supplies, and have a good time! Teacher professional development hours available.
